Best Corded Electric Lawn Mower

If you own a lawn the chances are that you will also own a lawn mower as the trouble with lawns is that in order for them to look good and be a place that people can enjoy, like a play area for children a safe distance from the busy streets or a place friends and family can gather for a BBQ, it must be mowed regularly.

Although some people may have a reel mower that works on muscle power, others may have gas mowers which may make mowing easier but are not really environmentally friendly, polluting the atmosphere and noisy, perhaps waking neighbours early in the mornings. It is therefore perhaps worth considering an electric lawn mower which are quiet and make a very small footprint on the environment.

There are two main types of electric lawn mowers, a battery powered lawn mower and corded push mowers. Both have many of the same beneficial qualities however a battery powered mower may be restrictive because of its limited battery charge. A corded mower however can be used endlessly once it is connected to the mains with a cord.

Both types are effective and require minimal maintenance and whilst they may have a higher purchase price, that extra money is made up for by the savings on fuel costs you would have using a gas powered mower. Like a gas powered mower though, an electric mower will afford you the opportunity to mow your lawn with just the absolute minimum of effort.

Electric mowers may not be ideal for the largest lawns however as they can be restrictive, a battery powered mower by its battery life and a corded mower by the length of the cord but for smaller or perhaps even medium sized lawns, many people find them ideal.

One additional factor you may want to consider though is the terrain of your lawn. Although most electric lawn mowers can handle inclines, a lawn with a lot of trees or other obstacles may provide problems with the cord if a corded mower is used.

If you do decide a corded mower may be right for you then here are 5 which some people consider are among the best of the many different available today.

1. The Versatile Greenworks 25022AZ

at Amazon.com

Greenworks 25022AZ review

This electric mower is very versatile in so far as it has a range of 7 different cutting heights to choose from and the choice of bagging, mulching or side discharging.

The mower has 7” wheels at the front and 11” wheels to the rear which makes it more maneuverable and therefore easier to navigate obstacles. The mower is lightweight but even so the folding handle makes it even easier to store in just a limited amount of space.

The mower is not self-propelled however as it is so light it barely needs any effort to push ensuring a fast and effective cut. As with any corded mower an extension cord will be needed even though one is not provided with the mower. When buying an extension cord first read the manual as often sellers will recommend also buying an extension cord but their suggestion is often for one which does not facilitate enough amps and that will lead to the motor over-heating and become damaged.

2.Large Bladed Earthwise 50520

at Amazon.com

Earthwise 50520 Review

The large 20” blade on this mower ensures a faster finish with less sweeps of the lawn being needed.

The cushioned V grip handle and 7” front wheels with 9 1/2” wheels to the rear provide a comfortable and effortless cut and has a single lever to afford easy height adjustments. For ease in cleaning up the lawn after mowing the mower offers, apart from side discharge, a choice of either mulching or bagging. It is nice to have a bag but when reversing the bag’s flap can be a nuisance as it get caught under the rear wheels.

Maneuvering this mower may be easy but many users have noted the front wheels allow too much ‘play’ giving them concerns they may fall off although they do not seem to.

The mower arrives fully assembled but several owners have complained that the blades or handles are damaged on arrival.

3.Compact American Lawn Mower Company 50514

at Amazon.com

American Lawn Mower Company 50514 Review

Even though compact in build this mower has an effective 14” blade and powerful 11amp motor to ensure it gets its job done with ease.

The mower has a choice of 5 cutting heights and a large bag which indicates how full it is to save frequent needs to check. The height adjuster however is plastic and a little flimsy. The mower does not discharge cuttings but offers a choice of mulching or bagging and the extra- large bag requires few emptying interruptions than most similar mowers.

Already compact the mower has a folding handle to make storage even easier and when in use the handle has different height settings for more comfortable use.

Due to its light weigh (25.4lbs) the mower is easy to control and maneuver. Whilst being easy to assemble with no tools needed, the blades have been known to work loose in a fairly short time.

Specifications

  • Engine: 11 amp motor
  • Cutting width: 14″
  • Height of Cut: 1 – 2.5″
  • Weight: 25.4 lb

4. Maneuverable WORX WG719

at Amazon.com

WORX WG719 review

Having been designed with caster wheels this mower is more maneuverable than most and has a folding handle to allow for easier storage.

This mower has a 20” cutting blade which means its blade is larger than most mowers and so wider strips can be cut reducing the number of rows and thereby reducing cutting time. The blade can also offer 7 different cutting heights and the mower affords three types of disposal, mulching, bagging or side discharge.

The castors allow for easy maneuverability and can be locked when going straight however, as the front castors stick out from the mower they inhibit mowing into corners. The bagger is effective when it catches the grass but due to poor design, grass nearly always discharges through gaps in the bagging system, causing shoes to get covered in cuttings.

Although not self-propelled this mower is still easy to use and is rugged enough for uneven terrains. The mower’s folding handle ensures easier storage.

Specifications

  • Engine: 13 Amp Motor
  • Cutting width: 20″
  • Height of Cut: 1.25″ – 4″
  • Weight: 48.5 lb

Advantages

  • 20” blade
  • Rugged
  • 7 different cutting heights
  • Folding handle for easy storage

Disadvantages

  • Poorly designed bagger
  • Protruding front caters

5. Wing Blade BLACK+DECKER BEMW472BH

at Amazon.com

BLACK+DECKER BEMW472BH review

The winged 15” steel blade on this mower claims to enable better cutting disposal into the bag avoiding the need to rake after completion of the mowing.

Black & Decker are a well-established and popular manufacturer of electrical household and yard tools with a good record for quality and reliability. This mower has a push button start and padded comfortable grip, bike type handles for ease of use and the rugged wheel treads allow for better traction and control in higher grass. The mower has easy to adjust 6 cutting height settings.

The fact the mower is easy to start is a bonus considering some users state it is easy to cut off when faced with rough grass or twigs.

Although the winged blade claims 30% better brass collection, many users have found that the deck is prone to congestion requiring frequent clearing whilst others claim the bag is too small for efficient mowing as it needs too frequent emptying.

Specifications

  • Engine: 10 amp motor
  • Cutting width: 15″
  • Height of Cut: 1″ – 3″
  • Weight: 38.9 lb

Advantages

  • Reliable
  • Easy start
  • Rugged wheels
  • Variable cutting heights

Disadvantages

  • Cuttings can cause problems
  • Prone to shutting off

Buyer’s Guide

Once you have determined that a corded electric mower would be the right choice to make for your mowing needs because it is quiet, does not pollute the environment, has low maintenance costs and requires low maintenance or just because they look nice, you will have a great deal to choose from and so you will have to consider which to buy.

Here are some of the things you should consider before making that decision:

Grass Management

The grass which is cut plays an important role in the maintenance of a healthy lawn as if it is left on the lawn, it acts as manure, improving the growth of the lawn and ensuring it remains a thing of beauty as well as just a convenient play or socializing area. Many mowers will provide either side or rear discharge of the cuttings and whilst this is fine, the cuttings will remain the length they are cut which some people consider unsightly. Mowers may also provide the option for mulching and this is where the mower cut up finely the cuttings and deposits them under the mower as it moves along. Mulched cuttings are not so unsightly and are more effective as manure.  Some mowers also offer bagging which means the cuttings are discharged into a bag so the grass can be placed where the owner thinks they will be of the most use or where they will be out of sight completely.

It is therefore important to choose an electric mower which offers the choice you want for your lawn management. Many of the corded electric mowers are 3 -1 which means they offer all 3 options.

Deck Size and Cutting Width

The number of times you have to go up and down your lawn in order to cut it does not only depend on the size of your lawn but also on the size of your mower’s blades. Most corded mowers have blades that range in width (often referred to as deck size) from 14” to 20” and so that should be a consideration.

Pushed or Self-Propelled

Even if an electric lawn mower is not self-propelled it is not hard to push and in most cases is easier to control and maneuver and so this is a good choice for small lawns with short grass however, if your lawn is larger or has long or consists of a type of grass which is hard to mow, a self-propelled mower will make the task easier.

Adjustable Cutting Heights

Trying to cut grass too low, below 30% of its height, can damage the blades of a mower and so depending on the height of your grass when you come to mow it, a different cutting height may be needed from the last time you mowed. Many electric mowers come with adjustable cutting heights and an option of at least 4 is perhaps preferable. How the height is adjusted should also be considered as although some may offer differing cutting heights, they may not be easy to adjust. There are some mowers that have easy to adjust cutting heights requiring just the flick of a switch or lever without having to use any tools or turn the mower on its side.

Conclusion

In this modern era with the state of the environment heavy on people’s minds, many people are turning to electric mowers in order to reduce their personal environmental footprint on the environment. This increase in popularity has encouraged the manufacturers to improve their electric mowers, making them almost as powerful as gas powered mowers resulting in there being a large number of electric mowers to choose from.

As concerns for the environment is likely to last a long time electric mowers may increase in popularity still further but technological advancements may provide an even wider choice. Today solar powered electric mowers are being developed and these will not have the disadvantages of a battery powered mower which has a limited battery life or the inconvenience of a long cord which corded mowers have.

There are also in development, robotic mowers and whilst not too many people may be happy about leaving the mowing of their lawn to a robot, some may. One other type of mower which is under development though may appeal to lawn owners and that is the mowers which are powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Combining hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water with only the need to provide hydrogen, Hydrogen fuel cells are expected to be a main source of power in the future and experiments on hydrogen fuel cell mowers have already started and could be in mass production within this decade.
